Celebrating a New Mindset!

I have been off social media (with the exception of Instagram stories) for the last week. Since being back online, I have noticed there is a lot of hype about 2020 (a new decade) starting in a couple days. Also, my feed is littered with ads trying to sell me or get me to opt-in for templates, masterclasses and webinars on planning for the new year, a new decade and what seems to be a new life. Which is going to start/change the moment the ball drops in NYC, right?!

celebrating a new mindset - new year

I am all for fresh starts, trust me! I have already fallen into the “eating right and working out” gimmick the new year brings and I hope I stick to it this year. This year, 2020, also brings me to 40 years old and I want the year to be epic, huge and the best ever.

What will 2020 look like for you?

Today, I find myself organizing my office (probably re-arranging it) buying two new calendars for my wall, picking up my Live Beyond Satisfied Planner from Staples (so excited), and creating a plan and a 2020 brain dump that will include the following:

– Fill out the beginning of my LBS 2020 planner, including January’s calendars.
– Course creations and launches.
– Printable creations and launches.
– Blogging outline and due dates.
– Social media schedule.
– Bookkeeping Boutique programs and schedules.
– Time mapping.
– Email schedule.
– Family events and special outings.
– Create my “to-don’t” list.
– Work through my mentor’s courses.

This coming week I also need to:

– Clear out my email inboxes.
– CRA work for clients.
– Prep for T4 season.
– Create a system and new process for a client.
– December 2019 bookkeeping.

I share all this because when I scroll through my social media and see all the ads, I begin to wonder; how in the world: 1) Will I find time to add another item that will magically make all of the above easier? And 2) how many of these magical programs and workshops would I have to do to “feel like I know what I am doing for 2020?”

Here is what I know…

Friends…

We already know WHAT we NEED to do, but we just don’t do it.

We don’t need another guru telling us “this is how you make 2020 epic” because you already know! I promise you; you do! What we NEED to do is follow through on the WHAT and we will see results!

The tools we need are around us.

Whether it is a calendar, a planner, social media tools, a gym or a workout DVD,  friends, colleagues, coaches, accountability partners, loved ones, puppies, the sun, a plane, a car, popcorn, the movies, computers, phones, etc. All the tools we need are right here.

new mindset - new year

We don’t need another “something or other” to fill our minds with an idea that we can snap our fingers, and everything is magically going to happen. It takes time, effort and probably some blood, sweat and tears! Sorry (not sorry) it’s true.

The fire within us

We NEED the fire to become a blaze! The fire NEEDS us to stoke it so it never dies, because we cannot build, create or help others when our fire is not raging. We NEED to continue to nurture the flame within, so that we can become who we KNOW (deep down) we are meant to be.

You can buy into all the hype around a new year and a new decade, which is supposed to equate to a new you, but that isn’t going to happen overnight, nor will it happen in 21 days.

Choose to change your mindset

It happens when YOU CHOOSE to change your mindset about you, your life and how you have been living it! It happens when YOU CHOOSE to use all the resources that are around you!

Here are some ways that you can start to CHOOSE to change your mindset. BUT before I share, remember, these are not happy pills that you take before bed and they will give you a new mindset overnight.

Practice gratitude

Get a notebook and before bed, EVERY NIGHT, write down 10 things you are grateful for. Three have to be about you, personally.

Relive your day

When your head hits the pillow at night, relive your day (the pieces you remember) and as you come upon a memory/event that you did not like the outcome of replay it again but this time allow the event to end the way you wanted it to.

For example, maybe you yelled at your children when you should have hugged them. Replay with the hug and not the yelling. This exercise will not only help you sleep better, it will make you feel more accomplished and you are also training yourself to act the way you truly want to next time the situation arises.

Brain dump what needs to be done

Brain dump every Sunday. Create a list of everything you think of that has to be completed or worked on during the week ahead. This will help remove the stress that comes from our minds being full of everything we have to do, which we tend to make 100% bigger in our brain.

Stop overextending yourself

Take three items off of your 2020 list. Chances are you have overextended yourself, professionally and personally, for the new year. I know I have. We always think that we can do more than we actually can and that is what brings on stress and disappointment. This is what extinguishes the inner flame.

new mindset 2020 - to do list

Trust me, I know this one is going to be hard, but it is SO worth doing. Just because you take them off your 2020 list doesn’t mean you will never do them. In fact, if you do this and save these items for 2021, you will be ready to conquer them in 2021, and they will actually get done.

I have done this already and it was heartbreaking to do. I took off speaking, writing a book and building a podcast from my 2020 list. But, I know my year will be better by making these decisions and I will be able to give more to these three projects in the coming years.

Choose to read more. Reading may feel overrated, boring and a waste of time, BUT it is (what I believe) a secret to a successful life. Choose books that will level up your life. Read the books you thought were dumb, boring and a waste of time when you were younger. Dive into business and self-help books that will become game changers, if you use the tools you are reading about.

Schedule time outs

Take a TIME-OUT! In fact, take many time-outs throughout the year. Even if you have to schedule them into your calendar (like me). It is SO important to play, laugh and love on those around you. You cannot be everything to everyone if you are not having fun and loving the life you are living.

Yes, 2020 is a new year and a new decade, but it is really just a flip of a page in the calendar. And being that I have personally flipped the pages 477 times, I can guarantee you that this calendar flip is physically no different then the last 476 and I can bet it is the same for you. If you want to make 2020 epic then YOU NEED to MAKE it EPIC! No one is going to do it for you.

new mindset for the future

Celebrate your accomplishments

So, on December 31st, I invite you to celebrate your accomplishments for this past year. What did you learn, what did you love and what should you have done differently? Then, as the ball drops and January 1, 2020 hits, I invite you to celebrate a new mindset! Because a New Year has been happening for everyone, for centuries now… but a NEW MINDSET, now that is something for just you and your epic life!

Even if, like me, you have been practicing mindset work for 12 years, there is ALWAYS room for improvement and more happiness!

Even the New Year’s Eve song says it best:

Auld Lang Syne

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?

Should all acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne ( Old Long Since)?

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

And surely you will buy your cup (the inner flame),
And surely I’ll buy mine,

And we’ll take a cup o’kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

We too have run around the slopes,
And picked the daisies fine,
We’ve wondered many weary foot,
Since auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

We too have paddled in the stream,
From morning sun to night,
But the seas between us broad have roared,
From auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

We’ll take a cup o’kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

The entire New Year’s Eve song (poem) is about mindset. Forgetting the bad, acknowledging the journeys we have taken this past year, focusing on a new, fresh mindset and filling our own cups first (ya, that… that is the inner flame) and beginning the new year being kind not only one another, but to ourselves.

What are you planning (or not planning) for 2020?

I would love to hear what you are planning (or not planning for 2020). Also, is there any of the above you will incorporate into your 2020? And, lastly, what are your plans for New Year’s Eve?

New Mindset - Roger & Sara

From my heart to yours, may every day of 2020 be the best day of your life. May you choose to fan your flame, help others and love on those around you.

Happy New Mindset Everyone!
